Bayobab Lands 2Africa Subsea Cable in Ghana, Further Strengthening Internet Connectivity in Africa
Bayobab Press

Bayobab (formerly MTN GlobalConnect) has landed the 45,000km 2Africa subsea cable on Ghanaian shores, in Accra.

The 2Africa subsea cable system will support the western and eastern regions of Africa, once complete in 2023 and 2024, respectively. This landing is one of several cable landings taking place across 46 locations in 33 countries for all consortium partners, bringing seamless connectivity across continents. This landing is the third landing in a series of Bayobab’s six target locations across five countries.

2Africa landing in Ghana is a significant step towards improving cable resilience, enhancing broadband penetration in the country, and enhancing Ghana's international connectivity. The expansion of submarine cable systems in the country will ensure the country's connectivity needs are met, promote economic growth, and enhance its resilience in the face of disruptions. This investment aligns with Bayobab’s long-term planning to support the country's evolving communication requirements and digital transformation.

Ghana is a strategic market for Bayobab, significantly contributing to achieving the Group’s strategic expansion and business aspirations. Ghana plays a crucial role in promoting digital acceleration in Africa by serving as an access hub for surrounding and inland countries: Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali. Ghana continues to increase its strategic importance in the WECA region, with the country now having six cable landings with the addition of the 2Africa Ghana landing station.

In October 2022, Bayobab opened its Global Customer Success Centres in Ghana and Kenya to enhance its customer service globally. The Customer Success Centres were set up to insource the Network Operations Centre (NOC) and establish the now one-year-old Service Operations Centre (SOC). The Customer Success Centres are a significant milestone in the expansion of Bayobab on the African continent.

The 2Africa Ghana cable landing further strengthens our presence and commitment to Ghana’s connectivity landscape. To cement our commitment, we have recently appointed the Managing Director for Bayobab Ghana, Daniel Asare, who will oversee the local business and strategic growth in the region. Daniel, who joined Bayobab in October 2023, has extensive experience in sales, marketing, business development and general management in the telecommunications and ISP environment.

This landing is an important step in realising our strategy to connect Africa with next-gen digital solutions. Bayobab’s target is to Connect Africa and roll out a total of 135,000 km of proprietary fibre by 2025. This target entrenches Bayobab as the number one African fibre player, by building subsea and terrestrial scalable capacity and resilience.

By harnessing the power of partnerships to change the future of Africa, we believe that we can continue to foster innovation and provide next-gen digital solutions across the continent.
