Zambia–Mozambique Border, 21 February 2026 – MTN Digital Infrastructure, commercially operating as Bayobab through its subsidiary Bayobab Zambia, together with Vodacom Moçambique, today announced the strategic launch of a fibre interconnection at the Zambia–Mozambique border. This milestone marks a significant step forward in Africa’s digital transformation journey and was commemorated in the presence of senior government officials and key industry stakeholders from both countries.

The partnership enhances cross-border connectivity and establishes a key fibre route linking inland networks to subsea cable systems on Africa’s eastern and western seaboards. The interconnection will enable direct international connectivity to the 2Africa submarine cable system, enhance network resilience, and accelerate digital inclusion across Southern Africa.

"This interconnection is a game-changer for Zambia and the region. By creating a seamless link to the 2Africa cable system, we are positioning Zambia as a regional hub for connectivity and enabling businesses and communities to thrive in the digital economy," said Lillian Mutwalo, Bayobab Zambia Managing Director.

The project strengthens regional integration through improved cross‑border connectivity between Zambia and Mozambique, supporting greater trade and economic collaboration. In addition, the initiative promotes digital inclusion by expanding broadband access to underserved and remote communities.

"This partnership strengthens Mozambique’s digital backbone and expands the capacity required to support growing demand for reliable connectivity. By enhancing cross border resilience, we are accelerating access to high quality digital services that drive economic growth and support the Government ‘s internet for All ambition by 2030” said Simon Karikari, Managing Director of Vodacom Mozambique.

The initiative aligns with Zambia and Mozambique’s national ICT strategies and enables infrastructure sharing which supports efficient co-investment, optimises network resources, minimises unnecessary duplication, and reduces the overall environmental footprint. The project also reflects MTN Group’s Ambition 2030 vision to deliver leading solutions across Africa and reinforces Vodacom’s commitment to connecting 260 million customers across Africa by 2030.
