2Africa West: Seamless Connectivity at Scale
Bayobab Press

2Africa West is the realisation of Bayobab’s vision of building a brighter connected Africa. As a proud MTN Group Company, Bayobab is honoured to be the first to bring this groundbreaking route online. 2Africa West delivers high-speed, low-latency connectivity to markets across Africa’s western shore, enabling an equitable digital transition.

A Continent Connected

2Africa West forms part of the larger 2Africa system, the world’s longest subsea cable at 45,000 kilometres, connecting 33 countries across Africa, Europe, and Asia. The western route extends this global network into critical markets, linking Yzerfontein and Duynefontein (South Africa), Lagos and Kwa Ibo (Nigeria), Accra (Ghana), and Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire). 2Africa extends to landings in the Republic of Congo, and onwards to Portugal and the UK. With landings in these key markets, Bayobab has invested in the largest number of 2Africa landing sites of any service provider on the continent, cementing our role as a leader in subsea infrastructure. Each landing point strengthens our regional connectivity, offering our customers with connections to major data centres and terrestrial networks. This ecosystem of connectivity offers redundancy, providing uninterrupted service to hyperscalers, mobile network operators, internet service providers and more.

Built for Scale and Speed

2Africa West is engineered to meet the demands of Africa’s digital future, supporting high-bandwidth applications. Bayobab is positioned to provide tailored capacity solutions for customers interested in capacity at scale. This low-latency capacity provides the technological foundation for cloud computing and AI, it also ensures long-term growth and future scalability. The cable’s burial depth has been increased by 50% compared to older systems, and routes avoid known high risk areas, ensuring maximum availability and reliability.

Open Access, Shared Opportunity

As with the broader 2Africa system, Bayobab delivers capacity on an open-access, carrier-neutral basis. This means service providers can procure capacity in carrier-neutral data centres or open-access cable landing stations along the system. By removing exclusivity, 2Africa West promotes collaboration and opens opportunities for African operators, increasing choice and competitive pricing. Bayobab’s partnerships extend across continents, enabling connections to additional systems on the east coast and beyond. We provide our customers with a pan-African network capable of connecting both coasts on a single infrastructure.

Empowering a Digital Ecosystem

2Africa West is the foundation for Africa’s digital future. By expanding access to high-speed, high-capacity connectivity, Bayobab supports the rollout of 4G and 5G networks and fuels innovation in digital sectors such as fintech and e-commerce. It empowers governments, companies, and communities to participate meaningfully in the digital economy. This launch is a symbol of African unity and global progress. From South Africa to Côte d’Ivoire, and beyond, the western route links millions of people through resilient digital infrastructure that stands ready to power Africa’s next chapter of growth.
